Theme in Historical Fantasy, with Marian L. Thorpe
This WriteIdeas episode looks at theme as an element in historical-fantasy fiction. I speak with Marian L. Thorpe, and we discuss how she has brought out theme in her series Empire's Legacy.
Currently, three books make up the series:
- Empire's Daughter 2015
- Empire's Hostage 2017
- Empire's Exile 2018 (fall publication)
Marian L. Thorpe is an indie author of historical fantasy and urban fantasy for mid-teens and up. Her Empire's Legacy series is set in a world where (in some societies) sexuality is fluid; it explores gender expectations, the conflicts between personal belief and societal norms, and how personal definitions of love and loyalty change with growth and experience. The world of Empire's Legacy was inspired by Marian’s interest in the history of Britain in the years 55 BC–450 AD, when it was a province of the Roman Empire called Britannia. She lives in Canada for most of the year, England for the rest. She has two cats, a husband, and, when she’s not writing or editing, she’s birding.
